Svekis named recipient of Tom Hansen Medal

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Chicago Bandits first-year catcher Gwen Svekis has been named the female recipient of the Tom Hansen Medal, an annual honor bestowed upon one male and one female student athlete- from each of the Pac-12 Conference’s member institutions who exhibits the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Svekis, whom the Bandits selected No. 3 overall in the 2018 NPF Draft, guided the Ducks to three conference championships during her time in Eugene, Oregon. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association Catcher of the Year, Svekis posted career-high marks in home runs (17) and RBI (60) during her final collegiate campaign. She garnered 45 home runs and 169 RBI throughout her career.

Svekis’ efforts at and behind the plate helped Oregon capture the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and a trip to the Women’s College World Series.

In addition to her contributions on the field, Svekis became the lead fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Baldfest event and raised $3,500 in funding for childhood cancer research.

The Davie, Florida, product has made six appearances during her rookie season with the Bandits and holds an unscathed fielding percentage (1.000) through nine opportunities.
