Sandberg guides Bandits to eighth consecutive win
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kristyn Sandberg spearheaded a 14-hit attack on the road and the Bandits won their eighth consecutive game to begin the 2018 campaign, beating the Aussie Spirit 7-4 Saturday night in Lawrence, Kansas.
After the Spirit jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, Sandberg’s RBI single through the left side evened the score in the second. She later walked, singled and scored a run to earn Vaultz Lock It Up! Player of the Game honors.
Sandberg has hit safely in all seven of her appearances this season.
The veteran catcher’s offensive outburst, combined with multi-hit efforts from Courtney Gano, Brenna Moss and Emily Crane, helped back a combined effort in the circle. Lacey Waldrop tossed the opening three frames and surrendered four runs before giving way to Haylie Wagner out of the bullpen.
Wagner (2-0) earned the win after not allowing a baseunner through two innings while striking out a pair. Her performance stifled any momentum from the Spirit side, who once held leads of 1-0 and 4-3.
Ally Carda replaced the southpaw in the sixth and delivered two shutout innings of work to collect her first save of the season.
The Bandits and Spirit will continue their nine-game stretch with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday from Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kansas. Live streaming of Sunday’s twin bill will be available via ESPN+.
— Attendance: 140
— Vaultz Lock It Up! Player of the Game: Kristyn Sandberg (2-for-3, BB, RBI, R)
— The Bandits have recorded 10 or more hits in all eight games during the 2018 season.
