Ocasio receives Rookie of the Week honors
ROSEMONT — Chicago Bandits right-hander Aleshia Ocasio has been the National Pro Fastpitch Week 5 Rookie of the Week, league officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
Ocasio, whom the Bandits selected 10th overall in the second round of the 2018 NPF Draft, made her professional debut Saturday against the Aussie Spirit. The former Florida two-way star earned the start in the series opener and delivered an impressive performance. Ocasio worked three shutout innings, allowing just a single baserunner to reach via a walk, and struck out three to record her first victory in the NPF.
Ocasio later appeared in relief as part of a combined perfect game along with right-hander Shelby Turnier and rookie southpaw Paige Lowary. In the perfect game effort, which marked the first for the franchise since July 23, 2015, Ocasio tossed a pair of scoreless frames. Fourteen of her 16 pitches (88 percent) were strikes.
The St. Cloud, Florida, product, who signed a three-year deal with the Bandits on June 11, has yet to record an at-bat through her first two games in the NPF.
