Bandits sign first-round pick Svekis to one-year deal

ROSEMONT — The Chicago Bandits have reached a one-year deal with draftee Gwen Svekis, team officials announced Friday.

Svekis, a standout catcher at Oregon, broke career highs in a number of statistical categories during the 2018 season. The Davie, Florida, resident belted 17 home runs and 60 RBI to pace the Ducks, and also sported a .995 fielding percentage.

“Gwen has been a staple in Oregon’s lineup over the past four years and she’s proven she can compete against some of the nation’s top talent,” Bandits general manager Toni Calmeyn said. “She’s been a force on both sides of the plate and we’re excited to see her continue to grow at the professional level.”

Svekis, a 2018 NFCA first team All-American and National Catcher of the Year recipient, joins fellow Oregon product DJ Sanders in the Bandits’ 2018 draft class. The pair becomes the third and fourth players from Eugene to don the black-and-orange (Alexa Peterson, 2017; Kailee Cuico, 2015).

The Bandits selected Svekis with the third overall pick in the 2018 NPF Draft.

Svekis marks the latest addition to a talented catching core in Rosemont. The three-time All-Pac-12 honoree joins veteran backstop Kristyn Sandberg, and first pros Courtney Gano and Sashel Palacios.

In a corresponding roster move, the Bandits released third-year infielder Kristen Brown.
