Bandits sign infielder Cheek for 1-year contract
ROSEMONT, III. – The Chicago Bandits sign University of Kentucky’s infielder Abbey Cheek to a 1-year contract, team officials announced Thursday morning.
Kentucky’s senior third baseman was the 14th overall pick in the third round of the 2019 NPF Draft. Cheek is currently hitting .462, which ranks sixth nationally. Cheek is also fifth nationally in slugging percentage (.957), fourth in walks (48), second in on-base percentage (.622) and 16th in home runs (16).
“Couldn’t be more excited to have a ballplayer like Abbey Cheek join the Bandits,” Bandits head coach Lauren Lappin said. “She is obviously known for her offensive prowess but she is also a complete player who knows how to defend. She is going to do big things in the NPF.”
The South Carolina native led the Wildcats to four consecutive NCAA Division I Softball Tournament appearances from 2016 to 2019, as well as attending the Super Regionals from 2017 to 2019. During her career at Kentucky, Cheek had broken the school record for career home runs (57), RBI’s (193) and runs scored (164).
UK’s season ended during the 2019 NCAA Seattle Super Regional (April 26) against the Washington Huskies 5-0. The Wildcats finished the season 36-24.
The four-time Cowles Cup champion Chicago Bandits will be back at Parkway Bank Sports Complex for the 2019 season. For more information about the Chicago Bandits or to reserve your season tickets, please visit chicagobandits.com or call the box office at 877-722-6348.
